It was so much fun to review our recorder prep activities.

For this activity I had a lock-box locked with 4 locks opened by keys. My lock box was filled with photo props and a choice board for a class reward. I had 4 groups and each group had to complete all four tasks to get a key to help the CLASS escape. If a group finished and had cleaned up their area, they were allowed to help other groups complete their tasks. We talked about how this activity not only prepared students to start recorder, but also how to communicate and work as a team.

Challenges:

Puzzle that says "Hot Cross Buns in a BOP but only with left hand on TOP"

Rhythm to a known song is on the back of the puzzle pieces- I did Rocky Mountain which features quarters, beamed eighths, and half notes- perfect review of rhythms for recorder.

Staff Note Labeling Worksheet (see below for details)

Steady Breath Obstacle Course with materials given (see below for details)

Extra Challenge:

Each lock was also either a known rhythm symbol, or a note on the staff with a corresponding key. One measure per puzzle piece. Don't forget to mix up the rhythm on the puzzle pieces, so students are not just flipping the puzzle over and being done.

*Staff Note Labeling Worksheet- Mine said the following:

Make a FACE, Tell me your AGE, DAB, Ask for a BAG with your next clue. Words in BOLD were written out on the musical treble clef staff.

*Bag for Obstacle Course- include directions (see below) any materials you want for students to create their obstacle course. Cotton Ball to blow through the course, Pencils/ other writing utensils, books, folders, dry erase boards, scarves, ribbons, any other classroom materials.

Process:

When students came in, I gave a basic rundown of each of the activities and split them into 4 groups. This took between 5 and 10 minutes for each class. When time started, I had 2 groups start with the puzzle, and 2 with the staff note labeling worksheet so they weren't all doing the same thing. Both the puzzle and staff worksheet led to the next clue once it was completed. The puzzle got flipped over and students rearranged the pieces to create the rhythm of Rocky Mountain. The Worksheet told students to get a BAG for the obstacle course. When a group finished a task they came and got me and I was able to check it off and let them know what their next task was. When they finished all 4, they got a key from me and had to figure out which lock their key corresponded with. After they unlocked their lock and cleaned up their space they were allowed to help other groups finish up their tasks so the whole class could escape.

One group escaped with just 1 minute remaining in class and it was such a celebration! I can't wait to do this activity again next year!

Obstacle course directions were as follows:

Use the materials in the bag to create a short obstacle course to practice LIGHT, STEADY air for recorder!

Choose Two or more obstacles from the following

Right Turn

Left Turn

Spiral

ZigZag around objects

When finished- find Mrs. Church and show her how each team member can complete the course blowing the puff ball through along the path utilizing light and steady air! We learned all about the science of sound, invented and made instruments from recycled materials and then made posters/ videos advertising our instruments so the school could check them out! Students were SO creative.

First, we did some science sound experiments and watched a few awesome science of sound videos (including the Sound Museum Magic School bus)! These videos showed us that, first, SOMETHING on the instrument needs to vibrate, and second, that the faster the vibrations, the higher the sound. After watching the short videos, we did our own experiments with salt on Tubano Drums, noticing that if you tapped with a mallet consistently the salt traveled to the edge of the drum but did not fall off. Other experiments you could do are the cans/ string telephones, building a water xylophone, and more! Through our experiments, realized that the bigger something is, the slower the vibrations are and therefore, the lower the sound. Small things are able to vibrate quickly so they make a higher sound. I like to say either "Big is low, small is high and that'll be true to the day we all die and even after that cause it's science." Or "Small is high, Big is low, that is science we should all know." I do remind them that it is the size of the part of the instrument that vibrates that determines the pitch, not the size of the instrument itself.

We learned all about the different classifications of instruments, too. We had at least one instrument from each HB-S. It follows a young mouse who, at first, thinks it is too quiet in his bedroom when he is trying to go to sleep. This year is hard. SO HARD. However, now that we are in December I have found a few things that are really helping me with planning this year to keep stress low and student engagement high. Check out my list below of my Top 5 planning tips (in no particular order).

1. Utilizing awesome websites to help teach concepts in a kid friendly way.

Want to compose? Use Chrome Music Lab to focus on form, or specific solfege. Use Groove Pizza to focus on Time Signature and rhythm.

Classics For Kids has a lot of great games to help explain musical concepts as well.

Need a kid friendly way to define terms so students understand? Have them research to make flashcards or other games to practice- giving them a bank of websites that may help such as:

https://www.theaterseatstore.com/blog/musical-glossary-kids - This website even has listening examples to accompany many musical words! Thank you to Celeste (the student of one of our EKM readers) for showing me this website. I love the way the definitions are so clear and concise.

https://www.sfsymphony.org/EducationCommunity/Music-Connects-Kids - This one has listening activities, instruments of the orchestra activities, a page for teachers, and a page for families!

2. Themes

Almost all of my lessons, especially in K-1, have some sort of theme that guides me while planning. I can connect our concept songs, any listening we may be doing, and any story books together to make a seamless lesson.

Recent K-1 Themes have been Thanksgiving (lots of turkey and pie songs!), Birds (Bluebird, Old Mr. Woodpecker, Cuckoo in the Clock, Old Mr. Owl, Turkey songs, Aviary from Carnival etc.), Ocean (Larry the lobster, charlie over the ocean, etc.) and more. Check out a previous post on Winter themes HERE

2-4 themes are often looser like Travel in 3rd grade (From Hungary to Japan, to different US states, all while practicing DO and prepping Tika-Tika) or Autumn (So many great listening examples and autumn songs for all ages to practice so many musical concepts!)

3. Planning the same activities for each grade level (just changing the difficulty)

Often my plan outlines for each grade look exactly the same. If I'm doing melody flashcards with 2nd grade, I'm also doing them for 3rd and 4th. If I want to practice writing melodies on a staff using manipulatives, any grade that has been presented some solfege is doing it so my materials for each group are the same. Games students of all ages love in my classroom include: Poison Pattern (both rhythmic and melodic), Rhythm Football, computer melody and rhythm games (like PDF or Smartboard games or Boom Cards), the Vote Game, and rhythm/ melody tag (students can only move on the given rhythm/ melody pattern)

Listening examples are an awesome activity that can be adapted across grade levels. We recently did an Autumn Leaves compare/ contrast activity where we listened to Nat King Cole's Autumn Leaves and then Ed Sheeran's Autumn Leaves (different songs) and each grade was able to use age appropriate vocab to describe the similarities and differences. Younger students were able to float like leaves during the song and then freeze in tree pose to give their bodies something to do while listening. This would work great with snow songs as well!

Example lesson skeleton:

Warm-up

Song 1

Melody Flashcards (with last card leading to song 2)

Song 2

Add instruments using Ostinato (ostinato is isolated rhythm from song 3)

Song 3

4. Mini Group Projects

These projects are with-in one class period but really help me assess who still needs help with our concepts. I may have groups create movement/body percussion showing the rhythm of a song or create new body signs to represent solfege. Or maybe students are getting into groups to come up with a new way to define and practice one of our vocab words (this works GREAT for tempo and dynamics words!) Students love teaming up and it really helps them become facilitators of their own learning (and I can just supervise and help as needed).

Recently, students created a 4 beat pattern using quarters, beamed eighths, and beamed 16ths and added body percussion- choosing one action for each type of note (quarter = clap, etc.) They then presented to the class and the class had to ID the rhythm just from watching the performance. Students LOVED it and I got to see who was able to create a pattern, keep a steady beat, and apply the body percussion as they were presenting.

5. Using my and my students FAVORITE activities

Sometimes when I am feeling overwhelmed this year I pull out a tried and true activity that I know students LOVE (and I love teaching). Students really pick up on the mood of their teachers, so when you are in a rut- think back to why you chose to teach music in the first place and pick a favorite activity that brings you joy.

I have favorite lessons connected to books and different listening examples that really can be inserted into my plans at any point in the year. Rock What Ya Got by Samantha Berger and I Promise by Lebron James are two examples of awesome books with lessons that can be adapted to any age (Click the book titles to be taken to lesson ideas). La La La and Journey are both books shown while classical music is playing to help enhance the story. Love the Nutcracker like I do? Pull out an activity at any time during the year - it doesn't have to be December to learn about Tchaikovsky or do movement activities with props to Nutcracker Music. Check out a ton of Nutcracker ideas HERE

Speaking of movement activities- I LOVE props like Ribbons, Scarves, and Basketballs so any time I am feeling stuck, I am sure to plan a favorite movement routine to work on Form, Rhythms, Melodic contour, mood, and more. Students had 4 main tasks:

1. Decide what mood their color/ page represented and how that would translate musically (tempo, dynamics, etc.)

2. Write a little more about their mood- Students could choose between writing a paragraph, a poem, or creating lyrics for step 3.

3. Create a song to go with their page- as if we are creating a soundtrack for the book. Students used either Chrome Music Lab song maker, beepbox, groove pizza, mario paint composer, classroom instruments or even a combo!

4. Find an existing favorite song to match their mood. We wanted a playlist of awesome songs that really embody different emotions and I loved all their answers!

While many of the pictures were fairly clear cut in the mood they portrayed, I thought it was really interesting that when groups chose the same color the moods they came up with were sometimes different- yet still both well thought out answers.

For example:

One teal group said that a teal song would be "Bored, Slow, and Quiet" and created this song: Teal- Bored

The other teal group said a teal song song would be "calm, medium slow, and mezzo piano" and created this song: Teal - Calm

I think both songs are great in their own way, and both match the picture. I LOVED that they had different interpretations of the picture!

Overall, there were so many creative groups! Some of my other favorite creations are below. I did not share any of the awesome video submissions I got- but there were some groups who went above and beyond and made movement routines to go with their work or divided up the lyrics of their songs so there were solos and instrument parts included.

After everything was turned in, I created a slide show with student paragraphs/ poems and QR codes to each groups song/ video performance and hung them in the hallway. Teachers were then able to hear the awesome creations. I played creations for younger classes as well. I loved this project so much, I decided I will be saving the slide show as a book to use as an example in future years.

Grey - Two girls who created 2 separate songs, and then combined them into 1.

Grey - Chill

Our mood is chill and apprehensive. Dynamite by BTS
Check out my new basketball routine to Dynamite by BTS!

This one is so fun and great for Moving On/ Graduation Ceremonies~ In fact, that's why I created it! My 4th graders are loving learning it to perform for their families.

To teach this routine, I usually spread it out over 2 class periods. The first class we learn the verse and Chorus, giving ourselves breaks during the Pre-Chorus and 2nd Chorus. Then in our second class we fill in the blanks and try the whole thing all together! All of the sections are pretty intuitive for my students, especially after they see it a few times- they really feel like the movements match the song. To help cue us in a different way, we talk about how different parts of the choreography match different rhythms to help cue ourselves. Basketball routines are always great for to rhythm practice, identifying form, gross motor skills, connecting to PE, and so much more! And of course, they are SUPER FUN!

This song uses a few basic skills throughout:

~Bounce/ Catch (Ta Z) This happens in the verse AND Chorus!

~Dribble with R, L, and Alternating hands (Quarter note pulse)- This one happens in the pre-chorus!

~Pass between hands above head/ at waist (Quarter OR eighth note pulse- up to you!)- This one is in the 2nd Chorus

We also punch the air with the ball and swirl it around our heads during the Chorus.

I have never been super athletic so I am always sure that ALL kids can feel successful with the routines I create. The hardest part is the dribbling, but I let kids know they can always use their dominant hand the whole time if that is easier. After they do basketball in PE, my students are pros!

The Form of the song is as follows:

<span style="font-family: Arial; They are great for this year, because many props can be easily sanitized between classes and they are super fun. I use prop routines to introduce students to new music, give them an opportunity to move to their favorite music in class, teach form, teach mood, and more!

When it comes to basketballs (or kick balls), we always start in 2nd grade with Bounce High, Bounce Low to get used to bouncing together in class and expand from there. After we are awesome at just bouncing to the beat, I challenge students to make up movements to show off their skills. They can toss the ball, pass under their legs, move side to side, etc. In fact, a few of the movements in my newest routine came from ideas from my kiddos!

As we get better at our ball skills, we move on to more challenging routines. A few years ago, in combination with our PE class, we did a routine to Trepak from The Nutcracker Ballet by Tchaikovsky, and last year during quarantine we did Believer by Imagine Dragons (videos below). This year, for Mozart's Birthday, I made up a routine to Rondo Alla Turca that my 3rd and 4th grade students LOVED it! We were able to practice ball skills, rhythms (sixteenth notes!), form, and have so much fun. Note- When talking about the form of this piece we discuss how Mozart's Rondo is a little different than other rondos. Typically a rondo has the A section repeating (ABACADA, etc.) but Mozart's keeps coming back to the shorter B (ABCBABcoda). I do NOT teach this all in one class- especially only seeing kids for 30 min at a time. We may do the beginning one day, and then add in the other sections the next class.

Rondo Alla Turca

Here is a rundown of the routine. It is the perfect lesson after returning in the new year!

Promises include:

I promise to use my voice and stand up for what's right. And when things get tough, to keep up the fight.

I promise to be me.

I promise to ask for help whenever I need it.

My students this year got to read the book and then create their own I Promise Rondo! The A section of the Rondo was created by me, and then each class made a few of their own Promise Chants for the other sections. After the chants were created, we went to chrome music lab and added melodies. They were a little tough to sing, but the kids LOVED creating a full song with a melody, a drum beat, and words. We ended up with a really cool video! We just used body percussion this year, but instruments could easily be used in all sections when social distancing and sanitizing after each touch is no longer required.

Student Promise Chants Include: (Click the link to get to the Chrome Music Lab Melodies)

I promise to treat others how I want to be treated. Sometimes kids come up with silly things, and that is totally fine with me. We write all of our patterns on the board and then can refer for the rest of the lesson. Common phrases are below- all 2 beats long.

Tired Mole

Snowshoe Rabbit or Hopping Rabbit

Snuffling Hedgehog or Prickly Hedgehog

Big Owl or Swooping Owl

Digging Badger

Trotting Fox

Great Bear

Meadow Mouse or Tiny Mouse

White Mitten or Snow White Mitten

Grandma Baba

Nicki

Many of my patterns end up being the same rhythm, but usually we are either still prepping quarter and beamed eighths, or have JUST learned them, so I don't mind the kids having practice hearing rhythms with different words.

Depending on the class, we may read the story again and have each student choose an animal to be, and an instrument to play their pattern on (in non-covid times of course- this year no instruments). While reading, we chain the patterns together so when the Mole comes, just the mole kids play, but when the Fox comes many pages later, we hear the mole, rabbit, hedgehog, owl, badger AND fox in turn as their animal names are stated in the story. On the sneeze we ALL get to play random for 3 seconds. If I want more individual assessment, we may have students "act out" the story so each animal is only one student. Then I can hear them play their own pattern and assess steady beat, rhythm and more quickly while having fun!

Finally, kids then get to make up their own 8 beat patterns using decks of animal cards with the patterns. If we are still preparing quarter and eighth, I use my iconic notation decks, but if we are practicing we use the stick notation decks. Get the decks HERE. They are not super fancy, but they are what I use (Examples below)! While the mittens, Baba, and Nicki cards are not used while reading, they are included in the decks for students to create their own patterns. I always have blank cards ready so students can add their own if they come up with something awesome earlier in the lesson (just paper cut to the same size as my laminated cards)!

After a few minutes to organize their 8 beat patterns (4 cards) students get a chance to share their creations. They read their patterns with both animal words, and rhythm words (ta, ta-di; long, short-short, etc.) This is another great quick assessment! Sometimes we share in a rondo form using the Mitten Song in the blog post mentioned above. I also love using the 2nd verse of "Snowpants" from Music K-8 (which is about mittens of course).

Do you use this wonderful book? I was listening to the Music Teacher Coffee Talk podcast last night where they went through their 20 in 2020 lists laughing and reflecting on this past crazy year. I thought it sounded like a fun idea, so here goes! This list is personal and professional things.

1. Get off the phone and with family! Be intentional about one on one kid time.

2. Make up more prop routines/ body percussion videos to popular songs (one a month at least!)

3. Sew more (esp quilting!)

4. Read 60 books (I did it this year, but quarantine definitely helped so I am keeping the same goal for next year).

5. Explore Columbus Parks with family

6. Take a drumming course

7. Get better at Ukulele

8. Write more postcards to students

9. Organize recorder materials

10. Keep Exercising (go for 5 nights a week!)

11. A Book of Spooky Surprises by J. Litton is one of my son's (and my students) favorites! I made up a little melody to go with the pages and he loves singing it to his little sister. This is a great book for fall. It does not mention Halloween specifically but utilizes a lot of typically Halloween characters like spiders, ghosts, witches and wizards so be sure to know your school and students before you use it. Click the picture to see where you can find the book!

If the guesser guesses correct, they get another turn (up to 3 turns total in my room) but if they are wrong, the student who tricked them gets a turn to hide and then guess.

Another fun way to use it in older grades is to turn the book into a Rondo. Tips for hybrid/ virtual general music learning!

Wow! What a start to the year! My school is currently hybrid and I am actually kind of loving it. Half of our students come Mon/Tues and the other half Thurs/Fri. Wednesday is dedicated to google meets, making videos, and meetings.

While hybrid, specials teachers in my district see our students in person 1x a week for 30 minutes and then we are supposed to also make 1 video lesson per grade that students can watch and do at home for asynchronous music learning.

Making videos has been so fun! My specials team has a theme each week to make our lessons kind of cohesive go help families out with the amount of work students have to do. My videos are not fancy at all, but I am basically just pretending that students are in the room and doing a (slightly shortened) version of the lesson I would already be presenting them already. Each video is done in one continuous take- if I mess up, I start over. I do this so I am not spending hours editing- I would rather focus on lesson content than be at my own computer all day splicing videos together. Are there mistakes in my videos- you bet- but does that happen when I am teaching in person as well? Of course! I think it is important for students to see me as human and not a perfect musician- so they feel comfortable trying new things and making mistakes as well!

Here are my top 5 tips for virtual/ hybrid learning:

1. Pretend the kids are in the room! When doing toddler music lessons with my kids this summer (yay WeJoySing!) I LOVED that his teacher just taught the lesson as she would as if all the toddlers were with her. She gave shoutouts to kids during each lesson, played games (and sometimes got her husband to join for 2 person games), sang, moved, danced, etc. It was as if she was really in our living room. This is what I am trying to do for my students. As Artie Almeida says "Heavy Academics, Delivered Joyfully" I am trying to bring joy to each lesson while not compromising on song literature, content, etc. even while teaching partly in person, and partly through recorded videos. To helps with at-home learning, I sent home music go-bags with a few materials they will use throughout the year and just let them know at the beginning of the video what they will need. Go-Bags do not have to be expensive! You can also send home a list of materials for students to find (with alternates) so that students can be playing instruments, composing, and more- all at home.

Go Bag:

2 wooden dowels (kids could also use kitchen utensils!)

homemade egg shaker (kids could use keys or an old rattle)

2 plastic dessert plates

1 scarf (I cut up a plastic table cloth) (do they have an bandana- or even or a kleenex?)

Page Protector (used as dry erase board!)with the following:

Heartbeat chart

Rhythm boxes chart

Single Rhythm cards (1 beat per card)

Body Percussion Cards

Staff

2. Get kids moving! Even though I sometimes feel a little silly moving by myself in my classroom, I always try to get kids moving in our lessons, both in person (non-locomotor) and virtually. Kids are getting so much screen time, I think it is so important to get them off of the screen for a bit. I try to make my lessons as active as possible, even with the in-person restrictions that are in place. My weekly assignments are very simple, and often doing/ creating something OUTSIDE. My specials team had a camping theme for our first two weeks so my music assignment was to go on a listening walk. Students LOVED it- and so did families because it got kids outside for bit. I also plan to have students find sticks or other outdoor materials to write rhythms, create a rhythm 4 square game, use found objects to create patterns, and more. Some of my videos are on youtube- check it out! New videos with no props will be posted soon, as many schools are not allowing any sharing of equipment.

3. Utilize pre-made materials and lessons. It is getting easier as I go into week 4 of school but there are definitely still times I feel super overwhelmed with all that is happening. While I am enjoying making videos, I am also trying to utilize materials I made last year, or curriculum materials I have access to. I have Musicplayonline.com this year and it is so great! There is so much on the site to have kids really practicing their rhythms, solfege, vocab, and more- they love it and it is already made for me. I do not have to spend time making interactive games or accompaniments to songs- it is already there. I am also utilizing Teachers Pay Teachers, as well as things I have made myself in the past. I am posting past movement routines and other lessons. (And in the future- I will have SO MANY sub plans ready!)

4. Make your space feel like home. I am very fortunate to still be in my classroom this year while we are hybrid and I decorated it with a Watermelon theme. I absolutely love coming into my room each day. If you are teaching from home, try to utilize a corner or even just a poster that you put up for each video to give your students (and yourself!) a consistent classroom feel. Most of my vidoes are made in my classroom, but when I make them at home I use a corner of my bedroom with a cozy chair and fun hexagon shelves I dressed with gifts from students and picture books I love. I had big plans to decorate my cart as well, until it was decided at the last minute that I would be able to use my room. Check out my watermelon decor HERE.

5. ROCK WHAT YA GOT and GIVE GRACE! This situation is so different for everyone this year- teachers, students, and parents. My running theme for the year is Rock What Ya Got. My students and I are rocking body percussion, only singing in videos or outside more than 12ft apart, lots of non-locomotor movement, rhythm reading, music history, music vocab and more. I am also trying to remember that parents and students are rocking what they got as well, and not everyone is tech savvy or has the same internet access. Not everyone can come to live google meets, or find the time to make sure everything gets done each week. I am giving a LOT of grace to students and parents this year. I know that they are doing their best and I want them to know that I care more about them than being sure that each tiny little part of each assignment is done. I want families to know I am here for them, and will help them with anything I can. I do not want to add just "one more thing" to the plate of a family, I want to be sure that all the music videos and assignments are joyful and a time that families look forward to completing and singing along with, rather than a burden.

Give yourself grace as well! There are so many people doing awesome things that make others feel like imposters. As long as you are delivering your lessons with love and joy- students will see that and LOVE music. You don't need a virtual classroom, or to edit your videos to add in special effects/ green screen etc. If you want to do those things- awesome! But if you don't that's awesome, too. Do what you need to do to make this year work for you and your students and try not to compare yourself to other teachers. It is so hard, and we often ALL feel imposter syndrome at some point, but YOU ARE AMAZING! Rock What Ya Got and have a great year!

Emily Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07283102434179585092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8694854490032565196.post-12473136244807632672020-06-23T11:57:00.003-07:002020-06-23T12:02:17.934-07:00Tuesday Book Club: 2020 Summer Reading List - Non FictionI have SO MANY books on my list this summer, and I hope to get to them all. Teaching students to "transgress" against racial, sexual, and class boundaries in order to achieve the gift of freedom is, for hooks, the teacher's most important goal.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">bell hooks speaks to the heart of education today: how can we rethink teaching practices in the age of multiculturalism? This is the rare book about teachers and students that dares to raise questions about eros and rage, grief and reconciliation, and the future of teaching itself."

I am doing an online book discussion for this book with some music teachers on Insta and I am so excited. Being the only Elementary Music Teacher in my district, I love when I get the chance to do meaningful PD and read important books with other music teachers.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">"In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to ‘bad people’ (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively."
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">Walk into any racially mixed high school and you will see Black, White, and Latino youth clustered in their own groups. Is this self-segregation a problem to address or a coping strategy? Beverly Daniel Tatum, a renowned authority on the psychology of racism, argues that straight talk about our racial identities is essential if we are serious about enabling communication across racial and ethnic divides. These topics have only become more urgent as the national conversation about race is increasingly acrimonious. This fully revised edition is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the dynamics of race in America.
It is called "Novel Effect."

When you open this app, you can choose a book from their vast collection and then it "listens" to you reading the book and plays music/ sound effects along with your voice! I just did Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site with my son and we both loved it! He was so excited they included the "Hey, Pipe Down" which is his favorite part.

There are a lot of music class favorites including:
Zin! Zin! Zin! a Violin
Giraffes Can't Dance
Goodnight, Moon
Time For Bed by Mem Fox
The Wonkey Donkey
The Day the Crayons Quit
Here We Are
The Bear Snores On

and they are always adding more!

I cannot wait to get back to school to use this app in my classroom! In the meantime I will continue to enhance stories I read to my kids. Dragons Love Tacos is up next!

Have fun with the app and have an amazing summer!Emily Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07283102434179585092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8694854490032565196.post-51374436028562494762020-03-19T05:46:00.004-07:002020-03-19T05:46:56.139-07:00Prop Routine Youtube Channel

Hey Friends!

I know these are trying times for many of us. I decided to post many of my prop routines on youtube so you could share with your students to get us all moving during this time at home. Many of them don't actually need the props- or you could easily find something to work at home.

My gym teacher and I combine every year to do a folk-dance unit and this year we decided December would be the perfect time. I tried to find a lot of fun Winter Folk Dances and we did some party line dances and a basket ball routine as well. Students had so much fun and our most requested dance was the Troika! They love the 3 person groups and how fast the music goes :) February is a great time to start this unit as the winter doldrums are setting in, and kids are getting antsy to MOVE and play more than they can when it's always snowing/ raining!

Dances we learned were:

Sasha - a great first mixer

Rural Felicity from Sashay the Donut - We did this one to Jingle Bell rock and it worked perfectly but you could choose almost any song in 4!

Troika - of course you have to do a dance that imitates a carriage being pulled by horses through the snow! Learn more about the Troika HERE

Ya'll. I teach recorder at 7:30am. I love recorder, I really do- it is one of my favorite things to teach, but I had to really find ways to make it exciting for my students AND myself because no one is awake yet at 7:30.

Practice:

Poison Pattern - we all know this game, and recorder takes it to the next level. Students LOVE both teacher vs class (If ANYONE plays the poison pattern, the teacher gets a point and if NO ONE plays the poison pattern the class gets a point) and every person for their self (All start the game standing. If they play the poison pattern they sit and then continue to practice while sitting- last student standing wins!) Recorder wars from TPT is also a great version of this game.

Record a lesson - Any time I can use students as teachers, I love to let them get up and lead. Flipgrid has been an amazing platform to allow students to record lessons and learn from their classmates. Students are able to choose any recorder note we currently know and write a lesson to teach that note. They need to say the name of the note, show where it is on the musical staff, explain and show how to play the note on the recorder, and then use the note in a pattern or song. I love how students often add in extras and really show their personality in their lessons. In addition to having students watch each others, I also love to save some of them to show the next year.

Make a song "Look Good" and "Sound Good"- My students are social kids (which students aren't?) and really enjoy working in groups. We do a lot of pair and group practice. A few times a month, students are given 10 minutes and a current practice song and asked to make it both "look good" AND "sound good". Not every student has to play every note of the song, but they all have to play something. Students have added harmony, movement, sound effects, and more to complete their project.

Create a Recorder Station or Center - I try to do centers at least once every other week, if not once a week with my 5th grade recorder students. About half way through our unit, students have group project to create their own recorder center to practice a specific pitch set. Some students just adapt a game we have already played, but many take it even further to develop their own game. We have had a recorder duck pond, relay races, board games, spinners, beach balls, and so many more awesome ideas. After the centers are created, we have a week where we just play each others games! I often steal their ideas to use the following year in my typical stations rotation.

Improvise and Compose:

Circle Echo - Students improvise a pattern and the class echos. We do it both facing in the circle, so you can see who is playing/ the fingerings AND facing out so it is more anonymous and students have to use their EARS to echo. We do this at least once a week, and it is amazing how much more confident students get both in creating and echoing patterns the more we practice.

Partner Patterns - Students get with a partner and create a 3-8 note pattern that they both love. After we play the patterns for each other, each partner set combines with another to create and even longer melody. Students are SO creative with these! I love when the groups combine and use harmony or alter their patterns a bit to really make them fit together. It is so neat to see their songs evolve as we continue the activity. You could continue to combine groups until the whole class has written a song together!

Rock Paper Scissors Composition - Rock = B, Paper = A, Scissors = G. Students create 2 measures of 4/4 (usually) using familiar rhythms. They then play rock, paper, scissors to fill in the pitches. Each note head = a game so beamed eighth notes would be 2 games of RPS. After they have written the pitch names under each note, they then transfer their songs to staff notation.

Dice Composition - This works very similar to above, but is great for when students know more than 3 notes. Students create a rhythm, then roll the dice for the pitches (1=B, 2=A, 3=G, 4=E, etc.)
After their song is created (we usually do two measures of 4/4) they can write the song in staff notation. I love to project and copy these songs to use in our warm-ups each day! They always come out so interesting!
I am almost done with winter break and will be using two books the week I get back.

Rock What Ya Got for grades 2-4 (Check out my post on RWYG HERE) and A Loud Winter's Nap for K-1.

A Loud Winter's Nap by Katy Hudson is the PERFECT sound story book where students can play instruments right along with the book. A Tortoise is searching for a place to nap for the winter, but keeps getting woken up by friends making loud noises! There are singing birds, sled-building beavers, and more.

When I read this book- I will read it straight through once, then read it again pausing to do a movement routine to each animal. (This would be a great idea for a Winter Program for K-1!)

Singing Robin- Rockin' Robin Plate Routine. I made up a fun routine using plates (two per kid) to follow the form of the song. We clap, flap, and shake along with the song!

Ice-Sculpting Rabbit- Bunny Hop. This dance is the one I remember doing when I was young! We follow the movements from THIS PERFORMANCE. They love it!

You an also "build Ice Sculptures" to Trepak from The Nutcracker. Pose like an ice sculpter/ sculpture on the accented beats and chisel away at the ice during the A section. During the B section, I have students brush away excess snow from the sculpture and think about what else their sculpture needs.

Squirrel snowball fight- Scarf Movement to Waltz of the Snowflakes from The Nutcracker. This is free movement. Students use scarves to act as snowflakes and they toss, arc, and glide around the room.

Sled Building Beaver- Beaver Counting Song- We sing THIS SONG with fun motions as shown in the video. You could either be the leader OR just have students follow along with the video. Eventually, students can sing along to it all.

Sled-Riding Tortoise- Tortoise Ribbon Routine- I made up a ribbon/scarf routine to Tortoise from Carnival of the Animals following the form of the song. You can see it below. I also sometimes play a line rider video for this part as well. My students especially love the "Dance of the Line Riders" video by Doodle Chaos with 3 sleds!

Ice Skating with Friends- Snowflake (Paper Plate) Ice Skating to Winter's Waltz from the Frozen Soundtrack. I use THIS SONG and give students 2 laminated snowflakes or two paper plates each. They then "Skate" around the room using their snowflakes/ plates as ice-skates. This is free movement, but we talk about how skaters are graceful, etc.

The next class, students will be very familiar with the story, so they will be able to easily pick an instrument to go with each loud animal. Students will then get to play their instrument during the story when their animal is mentioned.

Example instrument: Wood Block/ Temple Blocks for the Ice Sculpting Rabbit.

Enjoy reading this book!
This year, my 3rd and 4th grade choir students performed a program musically illustrating the book
The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. This book illustrates all I love about winter so well. It was PERFECT for a program.

I had student narrators read the story and we inserted a fun song every few pages.

Songs we performed:
It's a Marshmallow World
Frosty Weather
Snowpants from Music K8
Jingle Bell Dash by James Pierpont (I wouldn't use this one anymore, due to learning more about the history of Jingle Bells!)
In Summer- From Frozen
Winter Walk from Music K8 - We had an awesome 3rd grader play Violin along with this song!

Students seemed to LOVE all of our songs and had so much fun at our show. What did you do for your Winter Program this year?
I am so excited to be at a school that does Kinder programs and I am even more excited to have put together a program based on the song-tale Over in the Meadow. It is SO CUTE!

This is such an easy and fun program to put together because there are so many versions of the song out there. I made sure that students were singing lots of animal songs throughout the year and then they got to vote on their favorites to piece the program together. I had 3rd and 4th grade siblings singing the narration with the kinders chiming in each verse.

Songs we performed were:

Hello Song
Turtle- Tortoise from Carnival of the Animals- Scarf Routine
Fish- Aquarium from Carnival of the Animals- Finger Light Routine
Robin- Rockin' Robin - the original Bobby Day Recording- Plate Routine
Chipmunk- The Sycamore played by The Canadian Brass- Ribbon Routine
Bee- I'm Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee
Beaver- The Beaver Song (I learned this one in Girl Scouts when I was little but there are many versions online!)
Frog- Frog in the Meadow and On a Log, Mr. Frog
Lizard- The Lizard Song - It can be found on Youtube HERE. I emailed the composer and got permission to sing the song in our program- he said he never actually wrote it down though.
Duck- Alle Meine Entchen (All the Little Ducklings) - we sang in both English and German!
Rabbit- The Bunny Hop Dance!

We also learned other songs throughout the year that matched other animals commonly in the Over in the Meadow song. We learned Spider Songs, an Owl Flashlight Routine, another Owl Song, Fox Songs, Bird Songs and more!

The stage was super easy to decorate. I made lots of paper flowers and hung them up- easy peasy. Costumes were also super simple, as kids just wore their spring best!
There are SO MANY fun activities and videos to go with this song from the Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Grieg.

The version I read is adapted from Henrik Ibsen by Allison Flannery, Illustrated by Vesper Stamper and, of course, includes the music by Edvard Grieg.

After I read the book, we have a short conversation about how the story might fit with the music and then, the fun part, we get to act it out. I read the story again, as students are up and walking through the forest, entering the castle, looking around, and then running from the Mountain King (all to the rhythm of the song). I am sure to freeze on all the rests! If it gets to crazy, I tell the students that we need to hide frozen like a statue in an open doorway of the castle and we freeze silently and look side to side to make sure the King doesn't see us. After I can tell we have calmed down a bit, we start to try to escape again.

Rhythms- read or follow along with listening maps (Some people do quarter- rest at the end of the phrase and some do half note- so be prepared and make sure it matches what you do!)

Line Rider - This video is so fun, KIDS LOVE IT! Great at the end of a lesson or to introduce the song.

Following are some ways to take this song to the next level!

Cups!- I love to add cups to anything I can. For this song I do:
Clap Clap Tap-Tap Tap
Clap and Pass (z)
Students love how it gets faster and faster and faster!

Have boomwhackers? Students have so much fun with these play alongs. They are great for working together, pre-reading of music, and more!

Musication Percussion Playalong- This play along is similar, but uses common un-pitched percussion. My students like this even more than the boomwhacker one!

While preparing for this post I found some fun movement that mashes Head-Shoulders-Knees-Toes with In the Hall of the Mountain King. This is perfect for the littles.

A movement that is a little more complicated for older students can be done scattered or in a circle. I saw this on Twitter a few years ago and it has become a staple in my room in October. The linked video is of me explaining the movement- but make sure to click and follow Mrs. Holsman [@Mrs_Holsman] on Twitter as I got the idea from her (and she got it from Traci Patterson [@snapclappat])!
Trolls Mash Up- Right before the end of the month- it is so fun to learn the the Mountain King theme was sampled in the Trolls Movie! We listen first, and then have a dance party! What are your favorite In the Hall of the Mountain King Activities???
